We are pleased to inform that the International Spring School Abkhazia: From the Ancient Times to the Present” (Historical-Culturological Aspects); will be held on May 24-30 2024. For the third time, the project is implemented in collaboration with the Sokhumi State University through financial support from the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation within the framework of “A Grant Competition Supporting 2023 Georgian Occupied Territories Studying National Research Projects and International Scientific Events”. The main goal of the project is to comprehend the history of the occupied territory of Georgia and its integral part Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia based on contemporary scientific criteria, to debate existing topics, determine prospective research perspectives, develop collaborative ties, to integrate Georgian scientists into the international scientific space, and involve young scientists in issues related to Abkhazia. This year, for the first time, the school schedule covers the period from ancient times to the present day. Therefore, the participants will be able to understand the historical and cultural aspects related to Abkhazia. The spring school program is active and contains six learning modules: 1. About terms “Abkhazia” and “Abkhazian”; 2. "Abkhazia: From the Ancient times to the Present” (new module in the program). 3. Abkhazia: From the “Kingdom of Abkhazia” to the occupied territory; 4. Existence in Abkhazia: Ethnological excursion (new module in the program); 4. Abkhazia: Cultural Heritage; 5. Abkhazia in the Collections of the National Centre of Manuscripts. Along with lectures and workshops, round tables and panel discussions are planned, as well as field trips to visit historical monuments related to the topics. Prominent Georgian scientists and international researchers will share their research results and methodology with Georgian and foreign participants.
The International Spring School Abkhazia: From the Ancient Times to the Present (Historical-Culturological Aspects)-2024 is considered for researchers and students (MA, PhD) from Georgia and foreign countries interested in the history and culture of Georgia, especially of autonomous republic of Abkhazia. The working languages of the school are Georgian and English. Lectures and other activities will be held with the support of simultaneous translation.
Applicants will be selected on the basis of competition. Participants’ costs covered by the National Centre of Manuscripts includes accommodation, food and travel within Georgia, however individuals must cover their own travel cost to and from Tbilisi (Georgia).
