About the academic personnel of the School
The program of the International Spring School “Abkhazia: From the Middle Ages to the Present (Historical-Cultural Aspects)“ was quite versatile.
The representatives of different generations and scientific schools shared the results of their research and methodology to the participants of the School. The academic personnel of the School included: leading Georgian scholars of the National Centre of Manuscripts (Dr. Shalva Gloveli, Dr. Temo Jojua, Dr. Nino Kavtaria, Dr. Tamar Abuladze, etc.); researchers of the Sokhumi State University (prof. Zurab Papaskiri, prof. Lia Akhaladze, prof. Bezhan Khorava, prof. Kakha Kvashilava); foreign researchers (prof. Oliver Reisner, prof. Timothy Blauvelt), field specialists (Prof. Giorgi Anchabadze, Prof. Teimuraz Gvantseladze, Prof. Tamar Koridze, etc.).

About the participants of the School
The school educational program prompted great interest. Up to 40 applicants submitted their applications, further, as was determined by the project criteria, 16 participants were selected including MA and PhD students, and young Doctors of the history, art, and cultural studies from the Warsaw (Poland), Berlin (Germany), Ardahan (Turkey), Tel Aviv (Israel), London (Great Britain) and Georgia’s leading universities (the TSU, Iliauni, Sokhumi State University, Iakob Gogebashvili Telavi State University, etc.), this time school teachers from the Gali district joined the School.
Thanks to the active collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, and with the Gali Educational Resource Center involvement of participants from the occupied (Gali) territory became feasible.
Due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the school was conducted in a hybrid format, students from the Georgian Universities were present physically, in the face-to-face (9 participants) arrangement, one participant from Iakob Gogebashvili Telavi State University (Maia Akhalkatsishvili) and 6 foreign participants were able to participate in the School sessions through the Zoom-platform.
It is noteworthy that 7 applications were received from the schools of Gali district, of which 4 candidates were selected, as was determined by the project criteria. Unfortunately, just one participant (village Otobaia’s school) managed to arrive (and it was our sincere intention to make his stay worthwhile). Nonetheless, thanks to the hybrid format of the School it became possible to give the venue to all the applicants from the Gali district to participate in the School academic program.
The School procedure allowed that the academic program be published and disseminated; henceforth, the School’s lecture material “Abkhazia: From the Middle Ages to Present (Historical-Cultural Aspects) / Lecture Course of the International School“ (electronic version) was prepared and placed on the websites of the host as well as partner institutions’ – the National Centre of Manuscripts (www.manuscript.ge) and the Sokhumi State university (www.sou.edu.ge), respectively.
The collection is considered as an important scientific work on topical issues of the history of Abkhazia.
The School working languages were Georgian and English. Lectures and other activities were provided through synchronized translation. The last day of the school (May 31) was dedicated to presentations of the participants (see attached file, presentations of the School participants). The closing ceremony was held, the participants were awarded with certificates.
The project of the National Centre of Manuscripts, the “International Seasonal (Spring) School: “Abkhazia from the Middle Ages to the Present (Historical-Culturological Aspects)” is supported by the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia as a part of the “Scientific research projects on the Occupied territories of Georgia and the International Scientific events grant competition”, the project is implemented in partnership with the Sokhumi State University.
The School is an environment that functions as a platform for substantiating ideas rooted in different academic background and of versatile scientific prowess on the subject matter such as Abkhazia for the sake of cultivating prospective competent research on the local as well as the international levels.
The aim of the project is to create the platform where application of up-to-date methodology for understanding the autonomous republic of Abkhazia – an inalienable part of Georgia – its history from the middle ages to the present is alive and functioning, additionally the project matters in terms of enhancing background for bringing together the knowledge accumulated in this branch of study; as it sets forth the topical questions within the field of historical and culturological research of subject it defines prospective research criteria for it and forms partnerships, this way it promotes integration of Georgian scholars within the international academic research milieu.
The Spring School took place in the Korneli Kekelidze Georgian National Centre of Manuscripts (1/3 M. Aleksidze str., Tbilisi, Georgia).
About the Spring School Agenda
The Spring School program includes five learning modules:
- Terms “Abkhazian” and “Abkhazia”
- From the “Kingdom of Abkhazia” to the Occupied Territory
- Ecclesiastical processes in Abkhazia
- Abkhazia: Cultural Heritage
- Abkhazia in the collections of the National Centre of Manuscripts
The modules covered following activities:
- 20 lectures (see Program), among others, two thematically guided lectures (the Epigraphic fund of the National Museum of Georgia, the churches of Ateni Sioni, Svetickhoveli, Jvari);
- The round table discussions: 1) Terms “Abkhazian” and “Abkhazia”; 2) From the “Kingdom of Abkhazia” to the Occupied Territory;
- The panel discussion in the Sokhumi State University. Within the five lectures experts touched upon the subject matters which to large extent define how events are developing on the occupied territory of Abkhazia in terms of protection of cultural heritage, modern day ecclesiastical processes as well as provision of basic education needs.
- The unique exhibition took place embellished with manuscripts, historical documents, cartographic and archival material (as originals) that range exclusively within the Abkhazia topical matter – preserved at the National Centre of Manuscripts. Further, rare editions of “Abkhazian Alphabet” textbook (transcription reads as: “Anban Shiku“), translation of the “Knight in the Panther’s Skin” in Abkhazian executed in the original Georgia graphemes (written in the Georgian script, called Mkhedruli) were shown to the School participants;
- Interactive program – simulation “Abkhazia in the National Centre of Manuscripts’ archival funds” participants worked on the archival material with special cards prepared for them;
- The concluding session of the international School logically called for participants’ personal research presentations.
